Surfing Fitness : The true key to surfing stronger, longer

Surfing Fitness

If you've ever had to end a session early because your body's done, you know the feeling.

On a pumping day there's nothing worse than having to end earlier than you wanted because your just not in the shape you should be.

I know, I've been there. I was a distance runner in high school and college so I always had the endurance and flexibility, but was lacking in upper body strength.

Once I ended my collegiate running career I began working on finding the optimal mix for peak surf fitness.

I've been working and experimenting with different workouts and stretches in search of the perfect combination of Strength, Flexibility, and Endurance to help me surf as long and strong as possible.

If you have access to consistent surf, surfing is always going to be a great way to build your surfing fitness. But when the swells not peaking it's essential you still keep your fitness up as it is much easier to maintain your fitness levels than to rebuild them.

While everyone's mix is going to be different, I will share with you what I have learned from my trials and help you find the ideal mix for you.

Below I've divided Surfing Fitness into The Four Essentials:

1) Anaerobic Fitness/Strength - The Power of your Surfing

2) Flexibility - Stay Loose and Limber

3) Aerobic Fitness/Endurance - The Key to Surfing longer

4) Core Strength/Balance - Keep Power and Flow in your Surfing
