Having the right set of surfboards for your style can make an enormous difference in your surfing as you begin progressing. To truly get the most out of your surfing it is vital to have an understanding of the many different board types and attributes.

Hawaii Surfboards Surfboards come in all shapes and sizes, from Shortboards to Stand-up Paddleboards. Each board has it's strengths and weaknesses along with it's intended use. A tow-in board isn't going to do you a whole lot of good in waist high surf, while a shortboard is definitely not going to provide the paddling speed you'll need for a pumping day at Mavericks.

Knowing the different types of boards and what type of surfing they are designed for is just the first step in learning more.

Once you identify the types of boards that will fit your surfing needs you may then want to look deeper into the details of each of these types. While their are countless different shapes in the world, made out of all kinds of different materials, their are some measurements that are rather common in describing the finer details of a board.

When looking at boards you can learn alot about how they are designed to perform by having an understanding of their Shaping Details:

Rocker - Concave in the board generally from Nose to Tail

Tail Shape - Very diverse, often overlooked detail

Fin Setup - Essential to getting the ride you want out of your board

Rails - Hard or Rounded edges?

Nose - Hang Ten? Or just take a tip.

Length - How long do you want to go?

Width - How aggressive do you want your style?

Thickness - Make sure you'll float
