Legendary Surfing Girls
The Surfing Girls of today have come a long way from the Hollywood days of Gidget. From miraculous stories like the struggle and perseverance of Bethany Hamilton to the energy of the next generation of younger riders, there is a lot of excitement and hype around the women’s pro circuit these days.
I hope you enjoy my brief glimpse into the world that is Women’s Pro Surfing. Below you will find brief peaks at the lives of some of surfing’s most famed women. Obviously every year a new young gun enters the ranks but for now these are the Kings of the hill so to speak.
Bethany Hamilton
Obviously we have to kick it off with undoubtedly the most well know surf girl, Bethany Hamilton. From her recent release of Soul Surfer to her inspiring and heart touching story of following your dreams no matter what the circumstance, Bethany Hamilton is an inspiration to all who meet or see her surf.
Bethany is a born surfer from Kauai. She has been ripping up the Hawaiian circuits since her young child days of 8 years old. At only the age of 13, Bethany was a attacked by a 14 foot tiger shark of the North Shore. Talk about a bad day.
But Bethany wasn’t going to be defeated that easy. In just one month after the incident Bethany was back in the water and just 3 months later she was back on the competition circuit. With a custom handle created by her dad, Bethany has made a brilliant return to professional surfing and continues to compete to this day.
Carissa Moore
From here well move onto one of the hottest young guns ripping up the surf scene today, Nike sponsored and 2011 ASP World Champion, Carissa Moore. At the ripe young age of 10, Carissa was spotted telling her Dad she wanted to be the best surfer in the world. Watch out guys, she didn’t say best girl surfer either.
A local Hawaiian, Carissa Moore just became the youngest female to win the World Championship. With plenty of other up and coming young guns like Coco Ho it will be interesting to see if Carissa can hold onto this in 2012. There will definitely be a lot more to see of Carissa Moore in the future as she looks to bloom into the greatest surfer in the world.

Coco Ho
Another North Shore surf girl wrecking the women’s circuit is Coco Ho. Along with challenging Carissa Moore for the World Championship and every other event on the circuit she is on every big surf video with sponsorships from Nike, Swatch, Volcom, and Gatorade. The youth movement is truly full swing in this dynamic young surfer, she’s pretty cute too if you ask me.
Stephanie Gilmore
We can’t properly do a piece on surfing girls without giving some love to Australia, deep down under surfer Stephanie Gilmore. Taking 3rd in the World Championships in 2011, Steph is another gorgeous, dynamic surfer set to challenge Carissa in 2012.
This four time world champ from New South Wales never disappoints when she is in the water. With her first victory coming in 2005 at the Roxy Pro in Queensland she is somewhat of a veteran if there can be such a thing in women’s surfing.
That’s a wrap on some of the chargers in womens surfing these days. Check back often to see updates to these surfing girls as fresh new faces pop on the scene every year. Enjoy it baby! Life is too short.
