Surfing Art

Surfing Art comes in all shapes and sizes. From the monuments you see at piers like in Hermosa Beach to the latest Damian Fulton exhibition you find in El Segundo. You can even find Surf Art in your local Walmart, Target, or Marshalls these days.
Surf Art has been around since the Polynesians when they would etch into walls and woods images of Kings and others riding there enormous planks in on waves. This is part of the reason why we are able to track down traces of the original surfer’s of our world.
Surf Art has obviously come a long way since the days of the Polynesians along with every other aspect of modern surfing. My personal favorite modern surfing artist is Damian Fulton. Based out of El Segundo, California, Damian was originally a normal 9-5 office worker before he got fed up and decided to ditch the corporate world to go after his passions of surfing and art.
He combines these two passions into some of the most original and eye catching art I have seen since Andy Warhol. He is most famous for his works where he depicts characters leaving behind the corporate world for the joys of surfing.
My favorite piece of this type is one where an office worker is riding through a gorgeous tube as he rips off his suit. Two of Fulton’s works can be seen depicted here on this page. The majority of his work as you can see is of cartoons and set in Southern California.
He likes to do a lot of things based in El Segundo depicting the two smoke stacks that rise above the city. Stay true to your roots definitely fits all walks of life and work including art.
Chris Lundy is another famous surf artist. His pictures normally depict waves and he has a very distinct style of doing this. He uses a lot of colors and is very cartoony but gorgeous works. Definitely check his stuff out if you get a chance but both him and Fulton charge a pretty penny as their works have increased in popularity.
Mike Doyle a famed surfer who has won the 1970 World Surfing Championship, 1969 Duke Kahanamoku title, and voted the best surfer in the world twice by surfing magazine also decided to delve into art. With his gorgeous paintings of all things surfing he tends to focus more on longboarding. His work is very nice and won’t run as much as Fulton and Lundy generally.
For the women of the surfing world I would look towards Ron Croci. He brings women into a beautiful light generally picturing them hanging ten on longboards or steaming down the face of a huge wave in his surfing art.
Surfing Art generally has a lot of color involved and focuses heavily on the waves as they are the true life blood of our sport. I love love love Damian Fulton and Chris Lundy’s style and works but Doyle and Croci bring their own unique views into the surfing world and for this I give them mad respect. Check them all out if you get a chance.
