Surfboard Fins
Like every other piece of surfing gear on the market the selection of surfboard fins available is immaculate. With different brands, sizes, shapes, and materials it can be overwhelming and hard to know even where to begin.
The first thing you’re going to need to do is figure out the size of your fin box. This is going to vary greatly depending on the size and shape of your board. Longboards and Stand ups are going to use much bigger fins than your fish or shortboards.
Next thing I would consider would be the material. You typically can choose from plastic, composite core, glass, glass flex, bamboo, and fiberglass. Personally I prefer the composite Future Vector 2. These surfboard fins give you max speed through the water and hang on tight before you let go off the top of the lip.

Another benefit of Future fins is that they lock on the sides which will help in turns and when you bust out of the top of the wave. FCS just clip in and have been known to fall off. Dont know why the dont address this but they havent yet.
After you’ve selected the material you want to look at shape. Your bigger fins are going to be for your longboard and standups. They will be heavier and cause more drag but offer greater control and balance in the water.
Your smaller fins are going to stay on your shortboard or fish and the side bites of your bigger boards. They are going to be lighter and quicker.
They have experimented with a lot of different shapes. The Future Vector, Salty, Weed, and Downwind are going to be your Future spinoffs of normal fins. FCS is going to offer the Hatchet, Cutaway, and Fat boy. You may also find a fin with an open hole in the middle like some airplane wings.
Brand wise really Future and FCS are going to be the way to go. Unless you’re buying a board with fixed fins or a cheapy you are most likely going to have Future or FCS on them. You probably won’t have the top of the line fins originally but they are definitely worth the upgrade.
